Capacity-Building and Mentoring |
|
The success of NCRC's Conservation Model has resulted in many requests to work with other organisations. Our current focus is building expertise in biodiversity conservation and carbon issues. Further we will seek to strengthen five NGOs in Ghana and five NGOs in other West African countries to become more effective and accountable in delivering positive results in their environmental activities.
In Liberia our efforts are focused through a Coalition of Environmental NGOs and in Ghana it is targeted on specific partners with whom we are actively involved including Ghana Organic Agriculture Network (GOAN), Sirigu Women’s Organisation of Pottery and Art (SWOPA), Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary (WCHS) and others.
Specific actions during 2008-2012 include:
- Providing practical field training to 100 young African conservationists, including Ghanaian university students and staff of conservation organisations across the sub-region
- Expanding 10 existing trust funds to serve 15 additional rural communities in Ghana with secondary school scholarships for village youth or other capacity-building actions related to conservation themes in Ghana
- Providing trainings, attachments & mentoring at NCRC project sites in Ghana, at sites operated by partner NGOs in the sub-region, or in classroom settings to build better performing conservation NGOs
- Assisting other NGOs in organisational development issues (constitutions, re-structuring, re-focus missions, strategic planning, financial controls) and in project design, proposal development and fundraising
- Documenting and disseminating NCRC’s successful approaches and methods, including a “how to” tool box for community conservation and ecotourism initiatives, as well as training manuals on financial management
- Compiling and publishing case studies and success stories within communities, civil society, the private sector and government
- Engaging corporate employees in practical field projects to demonstrate and celebrate environmental champions in industry
